Gary Hanson grew up in Norton and Colby, Kansas, graduating from Colby High School in 1974. Gary graduated Summa Cum Laude from Eastern New Mexico University in 1978 majoring in political science and economics. While at Eastern, Gary was named the outstanding economics student in 1978 and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. He went on to law school at the University of Kansas, graduating in 1982. While at KU, Gary was a member of the Law Review, and had two student pieces published. While in school, Gary worked as a law clerk for the Kansas Attorney General, a mid-size Kansas City law firm, and finally the Stumbo firm where he then went to work as an associate lawyer in the fall of 1982. Gary remains with that firm, and has been a partner since 1986. Gary's practice includes an emphasis on municipal law, serving as city attorney for the cities of Silver Lake, Eskridge and Alta Vista, as well as counsel to over two dozen rural water districts. Gary also does general litigation and business cases. Gary has published articles in national and state publications and has made presentations on various aspects of the water utility industry. Most recently, Gary has served as moderator of the Attorney's Forum, a program for water utility attorneys held in conjunction with the Kansas Rural Water Association annual meeting. Gary is a member of the Kansas and Topeka Bar Associations. Gary and his wife Jeanne live in Topeka and Lake Wabaunsee.
